Alfalfa is the legume also known as the "Queen of forages", because it supplies millions of animals throughout the world with high quality feed.  Its taproot makes it heat and drought tolerant.

Byron Seeds, with its reputation as a grass seed company, continues to pursue the perfect alfalfa for two very good reasons.

1. Alfalfa makes sense
A. With its deep root system, alfalfa will continue to grow and yield under less than ideal moisture situations that may stop other cool season forages.
B. Strong Summer production allows for opportunity to make good dry hay and/or haylage.
C. Alfalfa/grass mixtures provide high quality pasture well into the summer.

2. Alfalfa makes cents
A. Alfalfa reduces nitrogen fertilizer expense for most succeeding crops.
B. Alfalfa provides a 10% to 15% yield boost to corn following alfalfa.
C. High yields with top production over 10 tons per acre.
D. High Calcium Production: Alfalfa produces more calcium per ton than any other forage or grain

Annual Forages

Byron Seed has experienced a tremendous increase in sales of annual forages the past 2 – 3 years.  The demand for the various annual forages have kept us “hoppin” trying to identify and obtain the best possible products to make available for our customers.  An interview with Samuel Fisher, the owner and CEO of Byron Seed LLC, has shed some light on the three questions that come up regarding this huge increase in demand.
