Cool Season Legumes

Cool Season Legumes

Nitrogen production is a key benefit of growing legume cover crops and green manures. Nitrogen accumulations by leguminous cover crops usually range from 40 to 200 lbs. of nitrogen per acre.

  • Austrian Winter Peas

Austrian winter peas prefer a well-limed, well drained clay or heavy loam soils, near neutral pH or above and moderate fertility. An excellent source of plow down N as the peas can produce from 90 to 150 lbs N per acre. Shallow roots and succulent stems limit their overwintering ability. Sustained cold below 18 F without snow cover usually kills Austrian winter peas. Excellent to use as a companion crop. Seeding depth 1 1/2 to 3". Planting rate 50-80 lbs/acre drilled, 90-100 lbs/acre broadcast. Available in 50 lb bags. Additional freight charges may apply to small orders.

  • Windham Winter Peas

Windham is a new winter pea that was developed in the Northwest. Windham is recognized as having improved winter hardiness. Windham has a dwarf growth habit and an upright canopy. Windham had a winter survival of 100% in a 2004 Wyoming trial and in 2004/2006 in the Pacific Northwest. Both years were considered "harsh winters" where less winter hardy entries were killed. In 2010-11, Windham was evaluated in Central Ohio alongside Austrian winter peas. According to Richard Leslie, who observed the plots on May 12th, 2011, “Windham Winter Peas interseeded in rows with Daikon Radish, survived the winter (as they did in another trial I observed) while Austrian Winter Peas did not. Windham Winter Peas had spring rhizobium nodules on the roots of the spring plants I dug.” Seed should be inoculated for best results. Available in 50 lb bags. Seeding rate is 80-120 lbs/acre alone or plant 15-30 lbs/acre of peas with Tillage Radishes (4 lbs/acre). Additional freight charges may apply. Limited supply.

  • CCS Crimson Clover

CCS Crimson Clover is a dense growing annual legume planted as a cover crop preceding corn, soybean, cotton and grain sorghum crop planting. It is a fast germinator, and can be see emerging as quickly as four days after planting depending on conditions. At termination, the dense growth forms a mat that helps suppress winter annual weeds and conserve soil moisture. Its fine roots help build soil structure and improve microbial activity. CCS Crimson Clover attracts beneficial insects, such as ladybugs. CCS Crimson clover is an annual clover that can be planted in the spring or fall. Fast, vigorous growth, excellent N source, soil builder, and good for grazing or haying. Crimson clover has the potential to produce from 70 to 150 units of N. Prefers well drained soils. In the fall, seed 6-8 weeks before frost. For spring seedings, plant after all danger of frost is past. Seeding rate is 12-18 lbs/acre drilled or 20-30 lbs/acre broadcast. Inoculant included. 2000 lb totes or 50 lb. bags. Volume discounts.

  • CCS Hairy Vetch

Hairy Vetch is a vigorous annual legume primarily used as a nitrogen-fixing cover crop. Hairy vetch is planted in the fall and starts growth before becoming dormant in winter. In the spring, with the longer days, the plants make abundant growth and fix large quantities of nitrogen. CCS Hairy Vetch has been developed by Steve Groff, Pennsylvania farmer and cover crop innovator, since 1996 to accommodate the high number of freeze-thaw cycles at his farm, among the most in North America. It is also an excellent choice for use in Midwest areas requiring winter hardiness in a cool season legume. CCS Hairy vetch can fix as much as 200 lb/acre of atmospheric nitrogen in ideal conditions. Inoculant included. Seeding rate 20 lbs. per acre drilled; 25 lbs. per acre broadcast; 15 lbs. per acre precision planted. Comes in 50 lb bags or 2000 lb totes. SEED IS CURRENTLY SOLD OUT.
