Soil Improvement
The major benefit of cover crops is the building of organic matter to the soil. Increased levels of organic matter influence soil humus which acts like a sponge for water and nutrients. Humus also provides nourishment for soil microbes. The roots of cover crops capture nutrients especially nitrogen left over from row crops and store it in the plant instead of nutrients leaching through the soil. Helps aeration and water infiltration.

MO-1 Annual Ryegrass
MO-1 is a diploid annual ryegrass that was bred at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Selection criteria included cold tolerance and improved forage yield. MO-1 has performed well in forage trials conducted in the Midwest and Southeastern US. MO-1 produces excellent annual forage if sown alone or in combination with fall sown small grains and annual clovers. MO-1 is one of the better varieties for winter-hardiness. Seed at 30-40 lbs for forage, 15-25 lbs for cover crop.DLF International Seed - This product is supplied by DLF International Seed, one of the largest grass companies in the world.
- Good winter-hardiness
- Rapid establishment
- Vigorous

KB Royal Annual Ryegrass
KB Royal annual ryegrass is bred to work in the Midwest as an annual winter-hardy cover crop to scavenge Nitrogen and other nutrients while building organic matter and improving soil structure. Deep growing roots break up natural hardpans (fragipans) and manmade plow-pans or compacted layers. With its deep root structure, improvements in corn and soybeans yields are greatly enhanced in dry years. May also be used to control erosion. Volume discounts starting at 4000 lbs. Cover crop seeding rate 15 lbs/acre drilled, 20-25 lbs aerial seeded.- Premier cover crop
- Fast establishing
- Fine, deep roots

Soil Builder
Soil Builder is just as the name implies is a mix designed to build your soils. Contains 40% annual ryegrass, 35% hairy vetch, 20% crimson clover, and 5% tillage radishes. Ryegrass to build humus, scavenge nutrients, and improve soil structure, tillage radish to help loosen and aerate the soil, hairy vetch and crimson clover to fix large amounts of nitrogen under many soil conditions. In MI, WI, MN, seed early to mid September. In southern IN, IL, and OH, seed mid-Aug thru September. Clover and hairy vetch are preinoculated. Seeding rate 15-25 lbs/acre.Byron Seed LLC - This product is supplied by Byron Seeds LLC, a company that specializes in forages.

Tillage Radishes
Tillage radishes are similar to oilseed radishes, but have a larger, deeper penetrating tap root to aid as a biological tool to reduce soil compaction. Tillage radishes are best planted in the fall at least 4-10 weeks before the first killing frost. Tillage radishes germinate rapidly and start covering the ground within few days. While growing, tillage radishes scavenge nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorous and calcium from deep within the soil profile, making them more readily available for the next crop. Tillage radishes do best with about 60 lbs Nitrogen (residual or applied) at seeding to promote growth. This nitrogen will be retained and released for the next crop. Great for weed suppression on weeds like henbit and chickweed. Five different Universities have verified an increase of 10-20 bushel per acre for corn and 7-9 bushel per acre increase for soybeans. Packaged in 50 lb bags. Seeding rate 8-10 lbs/acre drilled, 12-14 lbs/acre broadcast, 14-16 lbs/acre aerial seeded.- Increase water infiltration
- Break-up compaction
- Nitrogen scavenger

Hairy Vetch
Hairy Vetch is a vigorous annual legume primarily used as a nitrogen-fixing cover crop. Hairy vetch is planted in the fall and starts growth before becoming dormant in winter. In the spring, with the longer days, the plants make abundant growth and fix large quantities of nitrogen. Needs to be inoculated before seeding with a pea-vetch type inoculant. Seeding rate 20-30 lbs/acre.$1.85/ lb. -
Buckwheat
Buckwheat is a fast growing, short-season cover crop. It provides quick soil cover, weed suppression, and loosens the soil. Buckwheat is a summer annual that reaches maturity in 70-90 days. Performs well in poor soils, scavenges phosphorous, and is a great soil conditioner. Buckwheat prefers light to medium, well drained soils. Buckwheat is not drought tolerant. Plant after all danger of frost. Seeding rate 50-60 lbs/acre.$0.95/ lb. -
VNS Cereal Rye
Rye is a very popular cereal grain for cover crops or forage through late fall and early spring. Very aggressive to establish with good winter hardiness. Allelopathy effect from rye suppresses weeds. Cereal rye with its extensive fibrous root system is excellent for mellowing the soil. Rye matures very quickly in the spring. Harvest before "boot stage" for best quality. Yields typically between 1-1/2 to 2 ton DM/acre. 50 lb bags. Seed at 150 lbs/acre.- Winter hardy
