Clovers

Clovers are a popular legume for high quality protein and digestibility. Clovers can also fix a lot of nitrogen. Use white clovers primarily for grazing and red clovers for hay, especially in wetter areas that are lower in pH where alfalfas struggle. Both work well mixed with grasses for grazing or silage and balage. White clovers are persistent and can last several years while improved red clovers typically last approximately 3 years.

  • Freedom! Red Clover

Freedom! is named because of its freedom from pubescence (non-glandular hairs). With less pubescence than typical red clovers, Freedom! promotes faster drying of hay in the field which reduces the chance for loss of quality due to untimely rainfall. In addition, less pubescence also reduces dustiness of hay, thus improving air quality. Freedom! is also well adapted for grazing and silage. Freedom! produces excellent yields of highly palatable, nutritious forage. It is also a very persistent variety - exhibiting improved winter hardiness as well as improved heat and drought tolerance. Research trials at Cornell University show that Freedom! excels better than most other red clovers into the third year of production. Freedom! is one of the highest quality red clovers on the market.

Crimson clover is an annual clover that can be planted in the spring or fall. Fast, vigorous growth, excellent N source, soil builder, and good for grazing or haying. Crimson clover has the potential to produce from 70 to 150 units of N. Prefers well drained soils. Inoculate crimson clover if it hasn't been grown before. In the fall, seed 6-8 weeks before frost. For spring seedings, plant after all danger of frost is past. Seeding rate is 15-18 lbs/acre drilled or 22-30 lbs/acre broadcast.

  • Alice White Clover

Alice is a large-leaved, vigorous white clover variety which exhibits a tall growth pattern. It is a well-known, proven white clover that is extremely winter-hardy and grazing tolerant. Alice was the first white clover variety to successfully combine production and persistence when interplanted with grass. In addition, Alice is a legume, which produces its own nitrogen via nitrogen fixation - a symbiotic process in which Rhizobium bacteria in the root nodules "fix" nitrogen. Alice has been widely used in grazing systems and is recognized for its high palatability and nutritive value. Preinoculated and coated. Seed at 3-5 lbs/acre.
