Summer Annuals

Summer Annuals

Summer Annuals can produce a lot of forage in a short period of time during the summer months. Heat, moisture, and fertility will make them very productive. When moisture is short, they will wait for the rain. Our newer varieties will change the way you think about this excellent low cost crop. They can be grazed or harvested for silage or balage. Most of them work very well in double-crop situations after wheat or small grain harvest. Many of them also work to repair a thin alfalfa stand. Most grazing farms should devote a small percentage of their acres to some summer annuals to produce more forage during the "summer slump" period when cool season grasses are less productive

  • Wonderleaf Millet

This is a warm season annual, similar to Sudangrass, with no prussic acid. Dry matter production 20 percent less than Sudangrass with better digestibility and protein. Millet has smaller seeds, thus a lower seeding rate. It needs a soil temperature of 65 degrees or more to germinate, and growth slows down when cool weather comes (September). Frost kills it, but it can still be grazed with no fear of prussic acid. It needs good seed-to-soil contract and it’s not as competitive with existing grass as Sudangrass. Like Sudan, it can use lots of Nitrogen. Wonderleaf will grow a little bushier and not as tall as Sudan. Start grazing at 12 inches, but make sure the roots are not being pulled up. It should not be allowed to grow taller than 3 feet (or it will lose palatability), and do not graze lower than 6 inches to allow better regrowth. 50 lb. bag. Seeding rate 25-30 lbs/acre.

  • MC-MasterGraze BMR

One of the new applications for grazing/forage corn is utilizing the extreme digestibility of the brown midrib gene. Brown midrib (BMR) corn varieties have a natural mutation that results in lower concentrations of lignin produced in the stems and leaves during plant development; this results in higher fiber digestion. Dense stalks with an abundance of select sugars provide more energy and nutrition than any other type warm season forage; with dry matter yields up to 5 tons in only 7 to 8 weeks. This produces more tonnage and higher quality in a shorter period of time than most other forages. MC-MasterGraze BMR is known for expressing itself in foliage, not grain, meaning grain production is very minimal. The forage production is due in large to the tillering capabilities, tillers that have regrowth potential after grazing or cutting in the early stages. Can be grazed or cut and wilted for balage and haylage. Cut just before tassle emerges for highest quality. Also available in organic (see organic corn). Seed treatment of Poncho 250 is included in price. Packaged 80,000 kernal bags. Plant 30,000-40,000 pop/acre.

  • PCS 2020 BMR Sorghum x Sudangrass

Our #1 variety for yield & quality. We like to call this variety our "Sweet & Leafy" because it is full of sugar and is our leafiest variety. PCS 2020 BMR (brown mid-rib) is the newest generation of BMR 6 sorghum x sudan hybrids with the Brachytic Dwarf trait. This trait shortens the internode length, producing a short statured high leaf-to-stem ratio. Even though the plant is shorter than other hybrids it will produce equal or higher tonnage. With the shortened internodes it also allows closer cutting or grazing height. Excellent regrowth potential. Recommended seeding rate for Midwest is 25-40 lbs/acre. 50 lb bags. SEED SUPPLY IS VERY LIMITED THIS YEAR, ORDER EARLY TO RESERVE YOUR SEED NEEDS.

  • PCS 1010 BMR Forage Sorghum

New release in BMR 6 Genetics. PCS 1010 is a shorter earlier version of the BMR forage sorghums. Under most conditions, it will yield with the more full-season hybrids and has improved standability. Our choice of hybrids under dryland conditions, or where a shorter season hybrid is desired. The increase in standability is an advantage under all conditions. BMR 6 trait has significantly lower lignin levels for improved palatability and digestibility increasing milk and beef production. PCS 1010 is usually harvested between 90-95 days after emergence. Requires 33% less water than corn. Potential to equal or exceed corn silage in milk production. Good disease package. 40% greater IVTD forage quality rating over standard forage sorghum. Seeding rate 5-7 lbs/acre. 50 lb bag. Order early. SUPPLY IS LIMITED.

  • PCS 2010 BMR Sorghum x Sudangrass

Replaces Summer Prince in our bmr sorghum x sudangrass line-up. Hybrid Sorghum-Sudangrass with exceptional palatability and the addition of a Brown Midrib gene has shown marked reduction of lignin content in the plant. Lignin is the component of the cell walls that is generally regarded as the primary factor limiting the extent of forage fiber digestion. This totally new hybrid has shown an 18.9% average increase in feed value compared to conventionals and offers an additional $42.84 dollars per acre based on feed at $60.00 per ton. It offers a premium summer annual hybrid with the same agronomic characteristics you will find in a conventional sorghum- sudangrass hybrid such as excellent hay quality, heavy pasturing, superior drought tolerance, and a wide adaptability – plus the increased utilization and efficiency you get from the Brown Midrib gene. PCS 2010 is very long season in the South (approximately 100 days to bloom) this extends harvest window and can be used where PPS hybrids are not effective. In more northern regions it is approximately 65 days to bloom. With the tropical genetics in this hybrid PCS 2010 has much better regrowth in wet or humid conditions. Seeding rate 25-40 lbs in Midwest. 50 lb bag. SEED SUPPLY IS VERY LIMITED, ORDER EARLY TO RESERVE YOUR SEED NEEDS.
