Summer Annuals

Summer Annuals

Summer Annuals can produce a lot of forage in a short period of time during the summer months. Heat, moisture, and fertility will make them very productive. When moisture is short, they will wait for the rain. Our newer varieties will change the way you think about this excellent low cost crop. They can be grazed or harvested for silage or balage. Most of them work very well in double-crop situations after wheat or small grain harvest. Many of them also work to repair a thin alfalfa stand. Most grazing farms should devote a small percentage of their acres to some summer annuals to produce more forage during the "summer slump" period when cool season grasses are less productive

  • Silage Supreme MS BMR Forage Sorghum

Silage Supreme is the next generation of BMR (gene 6) forage sorghums. It is male sterile. If there is no pollen source nearby, it will not produce a grain head. With no grain, the plant does not cannibalize the stalk. This means it will have a higher energy (sugar) content than the other BMR Hybrids. Silage Supreme BMR has improved standability when compared to earlier BMR Hybrids. Packaged in 50 lb bags. Seeding rate 8-12 lbs/acre.

  • Summer Supreme BMR Sorghum Sudangrass

Summer Supreme BMR Sorghum Sudangrass combines the dual benefits of the brown midrib (gene 6) trait and the Photoperiod sensitive gene is a breakthrough offering high yield potential, palatability, fiber digestibility and the wide window for harvesting consistent high quality forage over the entire growing season. Summer Supreme BMR Sorghum Sudangrass continues to grow in the vegetative state until the plant typically receives less than 12 hours and 45 minutes of daily sunlight in which it then goes reproductive. One of our most drought tolerant varieties. Packaged in 50 lb bags. Seeding rate 35-50 lbs/acre.

  • Summer Dream BMR Sorghum Sudangrass

Summer Dream BMR Sorghum Sudangrass is a leafy BMR-6 variety with the new brachytic dwarf trait. Brachytic dwarf varieties are not as tall as normal hybrids, because they have shorter, more compacted internodes. However, this leafy variety makes comparable yields to the taller stalk varieties by producing almost double the leaf material per foot of stalk. Because of its leafiness, it works very well for grazing or multiple machine harvests. Regrowth is exceptionally good with this variety because it has more compacted growth nodes in the bottom 6" of the stem. Contains the BMR-6 gene for maximum digestibility and great animal performance. Highest in leaf to stem ratio! Packaged in 50 lb bags. Seeding rate 35-50 lbs/acre.

  • Summer Prince BMR Sorghum Sudangrass

Summer Prince Hybrid Sorghum x Sudangrass with exceptional palatability and the addition of the Brown Midrib Gene 6 has shown marked reduction of lignin content in the plant. It offers a premium summer annual hybrid with the same agronomic characteristics you will find in a conventional sorghum x sudangrass hybrid such as excellent hay quality, heavy pasturing, superior drought tolerance, and a wide adaptability - plus the increased utilization and efficiency you get from the Brown Midrib Gene 6. Summer Prince is very long season in the South (approx. 95 to 100 days to heading) this extends the harvest window and can be used where photoperiod sensitive hybrids are not effective. In more northern regions approximately 65 days to heading. With tropical genetics in this hybrid we have much better regrowth in wet or humid conditions. One of the most disease resistant hybrids, making it an ideal choice for those areas where leaf diseases such as Anthracnose and Fusarium are present. Packaged in 50 lb bags. Seeding rate 35-50 lbs/acre.

  • Wonderleaf Millet

This is a warm season annual, similar to Sudangrass, with no prussic acid. Dry matter production 20 percent less than Sudangrass with better digestibility and protein. Millet has smaller seeds, thus a lower seeding rate. It needs a soil temperature of 65 degrees or more to germinate, and growth slows down when cool weather comes (September). Frost kills it, but it can still be grazed with no fear of prussic acid. It needs good seed-to-soil contract and it’s not as competitive with existing grass as Sudangrass. Like Sudan, it can use lots of Nitrogen. Wonderleaf will grow a little bushier and not as tall as Sudan. Start grazing at 12 inches, but make sure the roots are not being pulled up. It should not be allowed to grow taller than 3 feet (or it will lose palatability), and do not graze lower than 6 inches to allow better regrowth. 50 lb. bag. Seeding rate 25-30 lbs/acre.
