Chicory is fantastic for fattening lambs
and steers. University trials indicate an average daily gain on
lambs of 300 grams. It’s an excellent feed as well for goats
and wildlife. Chicory can be a very valuable addition to most
farms if managed properly. It will not be persistent if it
doesn’t have a 25 day rest period between grazings. However, it
really boosts first year production in new seeding sod dryland
pastures. It’s very high in mineral content, very high in
digestibility, low in fiber and high in protein. Chicory gets
blue flowers at maturity.
Forage Feast
-Order Now-
Forage Feast tends to be leafier and more digestible and
bold resistant. It’s an ancient, wonderful special purpose
perennial forage vegetable from France with winter-hardiness,
excellent summer production, and very high feed value. A deep
tap root makes it very drought tolerant. It looks like a giant
dandelion, but leafier. A farm in Michigan reported that his
Forage Feast Chicory provided feed for his sheep in the summer
of 1996 when all else was drought brown.
Puna
-Order Now-
This perennial herb was developed in New Zealand
especially for forage or grazing. It has a deep tap root, which
makes it very drought tolerant. Puna Chicory is high in protein
(18% to 28% crude protein) and is richer in minerals and trace
elements than any other forage. Puna can be planted with
Alfalafa and harvested as haylage. Puna Chicory should be
rotational grazed for best performance.
